Those ancient Greeks and their gods
sure knew a good thing when they saw it. The peppermint
plant derives its name from a Greek myth in which
a beautiful nymph named Minthe is pursued by Hades,
god of the underworld. In a fit of jealousy, Hades'
wife, Persephone, turns Minthe into a plant. Although
Hades isn't able to return Minthe to human form, he
softens the blow by bestowing upon her an enchanting
fragrance.
This herb packs far more than just an olfactory wallop, however. With its heady bite and refreshing burst of flavor, peppermint is particularly glorious
in warmer weather when you can add it to your iced tea, spring salads, and chilled soups. It is also used in many over-the-counter personal products and is said to do everything from freshening breath to relieving insomnia to soothing stomach woes.
