Why is Washing Powder both a cleanser and an exfoliant? Does that mean I can't use it every day?

You can absolutely use DHC Washing Powder every day. Washing Powder is a daily cleanser that contains an enzyme from papaya known as papain. Enzymes are gentler than alphahydroxy acids, such as glycolic acid and lactic acid, which penetrate deeply to exfoliate. Instead, the papaya enzyme exfoliates the surface of your skin by dissolving protein (your dead skin cells). Washing Powder activates upon contact with water to create a light lather. Try using it with DHC Washing Puff to turn your cleansing into an at-home spa treatment. Cleansing and exfoliating in one quick and simple step—what’s not to love?

I found a recipe for an all-natural face scrub that calls for brown sugar—indicating the less refined it is, the better. Would the brown sugar I see in your Fine Foods section be appropriate to use?

The ingredients for such treatments, including oatmeal, or in this case, raw sugar grains, are typically selected for their naturally coarse textures and exfoliant properties. DHC Japanese Brown Sugar is not overly refined, making it an excellent choice for your needs. It is also free of unnecessary dyes and chemical additives, which results in a more granular consistency and molasses-rich flavor—perfect for baking and everyday table use.

I recently tried your Renewing AHA Cream, but it made my skin tingle and turn pink. Is that normal or is Renewing AHA Cream just not for me?

That reaction is perfectly normal. Renewing AHA Cream (AHA stands for alphahydroxy acid) contains an effective 10% concentration of lactic acid, which loosens the glue-like substances that bind dull surface cells to each other. The prickly, tingling sensation and slight redness signal the peeling away of dead skin and are mostly experienced by first-time AHA users and those with fair skin. Renewing AHA Cream also contains olive oil and vitamin E, emollients that can help lessen the sensation. Overall, the reaction only lasts a few moments and will diminish with repeated use as your skin becomes more tolerant. However, what you get in return—a smoother, glowing complexion—lasts much, much longer.

Why is exfoliation important? How do I know which exfoliant is right for me?

Our skin is constantly shedding dead skin cells, every single day. If you don't exfoliate, the dead skin cells can build up and not only cause a dull, flaky appearance, but also clog pores. Help out your complexion a couple of times a week. Exfoliation is my favorite skincare step because it instantly awakens skin. DHC offers you several options to choose from. DHC Facial Scrub contains rounded apricot seed kernels to polish away dead skin cell buildup. If you want to step exfoliation up a notch, try using DHC Renewing AHA Cream, containing 10% lactic acid, instead. This treatment helps promote rapid cell turnover, fights fine lines, and evens out skin tone. Because new skin is revealed, it is crucial to wear a sunscreen afterward. And let's not forget those of you with sensitive skin—you do have options! Try using DHC Facial Brush. The bristles are soft and gentle, and you're in control of how vigorously you exfoliate. Once you slough away all those dead cells, you're well on your way to vibrancy.

How often should I use the Facial Brush? How often do I replace it? What am I doing wrong when it changes color quickly?

DHC Facial Brush is made from hinoki, a type of Japanese aromatic cedar wood. It is naturally water-resistant, but not waterproof, so be sure to store it in an area that is safe from steam or water. Expect some bristles to shed, that's normal, but regardless of its condition, the Facial Brush should be replaced frequently, generally every two to three months, so that it does not begin to harbor bacteria. Lift away dull surface cells, improve circulation, and enjoy light, gentle exfoliation one to two times per week, or even more often if desired. This versatile brush can be used with or without a cleanser, wet or dry. Pair with DHC Cleansing Foam and enjoy a stimulating lather infused with conditioning olive oil and vitamin E, brightening peony, and citrus unshiu extract (satsuma mandarin orange), rich in vitamin C.
