OCCUPATION
Registered nurse. I helped students injured at Virginia Tech last year. They—and
countless others that I am privileged to care for—give me a sense of purpose
and humility.
INTERESTS
As a single mom I work a lot, so I enjoy spending my days off with my three children.
I also love cooking, exercising outdoors, and trying new wines—I would love
to visit Italy’s wine country one day.
I FEEL PASSIONATE ABOUT
Mental health receiving the attention it deserves in our society. My husband was
bipolar and committed suicide two years ago. About one in four adults suffers from
a diagnosable mental disorder, and it is the leading cause of disability for Americans
aged 15–44 according to the National Institute of Mental Health (www.nimh.nih.gov).
Mental disorders are legitimate diseases. Often people who suffer from them feel
stigmatized by society, even though research shows that brain chemistry and structure
are factors in their diagnoses
ON SURVIVING TRAGEDY
I think the best advice is to live one day at a time. When my husband died, our
daughter was one month old and life seemed overwhelming. I found strength in knowing
my family and friends were by my side and God was always with me.

FUTURE PLANS
Life is an adventure, and I welcome the challenges and opportunities that present
themselves. First and foremost I plan on being happy. And my love of nursing and
the satisfaction and sense of purpose it gives me tell me I will continue to practice
nursing.

The ability to prioritize! Remember what
is important and put those people and tasks first.

THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE ME
Assertive, confident, and charismatic. My oldest son overheard me discussing this
question and said, “Can you say ‘awesome’?”.
