"Something I love about being an artist is that you can make whatever you imagine, in the studio, of course, but also in your life."

Occupation
Artist/Writer/Educator

I knew I would be an artist when ...
I remember sitting in my room as a kid, drawing, collaging, writing little stories or making cartoons for hours on end. In high school, I took all the art classes I could and made things in and out of class. So I guess I've always been an artist in a way, but it wasn't until after college that I really started to feel like that was what I would do or be.

A turning point ...
I would never have dreamed of applying to the Customer Spotlight. But in the spring of 2013, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The whole experience has changed my outlook and reminded me how important it is to connect with friends and family, to be open and available to life, and to be present. If having my picture and something about my experience in the catalog inspires just one woman to feel better about herself and her image, then it would be worth it.

Other interests and hobbies
My husband, Dane, is also an artist, so we often go to art openings and events together. I have been practicing yoga and meditation for 18 years, and I practice nearly every day. I also enjoy spending time with Dane and our crew of four black-and-white cats. My mom lives nearby, so we have fun meeting her for dinner, or she and I will go to a play or a museum. I also have an amazing group of girlfriends. Finally, I am an avid reader.

Favorite artists
To name a few ... Louise Bourgeois, for her raw honesty and fierce dedication; Keith Haring, for his playful exuberance and generosity of spirit; Marcel Duchamp; for his radical ideas and piercing wit; Marnie Weber, for the depth of her imagination and vision; and Alina Szapocznikow, for her experimentation and creativity.

Best skincare advice
Moisturize. And use sunscreen from an early age, definitely.

On feeling beautiful in your own skin
Be yourself! Discover what you are passionate about and make space for it in your life, even if it's not your profession. Surround yourself with people that love you for who you are, not for what you do, or look like, or represent. Most of all, take life as it comes and try to enjoy the ride.

More about Annie

Passport stamps
Some of my favorite places that I have traveled to are Greece, Mexico, Spain, Turkey, Italy and Thailand. I would like to go to South America, India and Japan. I hope to travel to every continent one day.

Personal style?
It changes depending on the day. In general, I like to wear something that makes me feel good, comfortable, but also with something special.

How did you discover DHC?
I got a sample and catalog in the mail around the time that another (much more expensive!) cream that I had been using was discontinued, so I was looking for something new. I tried Deep Cleansing Oil and have continued to use DHC since then.

Favorite DHC products

Deep Cleansing Oil is hands-down the best makeup remover I have ever used. I like that it cleanses and moisturizes at the same time and feels good on my skin.

I have dry, sensitive skin and Ceramide Cream is great. When I first started using it, my skin was extra-dry in some places; those went away quickly after starting to use this cream.

Concentrated Eye Cream I like the way this rich eye cream feels, soft and velvety.

I like that Olive Leaf Cream is light and bright.

I like that Olive Corn Body Scrub & Polish is a fun product for body wash.
