"Skincare is the key to beauty. I do not wear a lot of makeup, but I do wear some, and I want a smooth, nice 'palette' for the makeup."
Retired high school sign language interpreter.
Seeing the "sign"
I was 29 years old and needed a change, a real vocation that would be fulfilling. "What should I do?" I agonized. And—no kidding, this really happened—I felt these two words drop right into my heart: "Sign language." The strange thing is, I'd never met a deaf person and knew absolutely nothing about it.
Interests & hobbies
I love to read. I literally have stacks of books waiting to be plucked from a pile and enjoyed. Also, I volunteer at a hospital a few minutes from where we live.
My husband Jim and I have three of the cutest dogs ever: Frodo and Samwise, both Yorkshire Terriers, and Petey Pippin, a wee little 3-pound poodle. See the trend? Frodo, Samwise, and Pippin are three of the hobbits from The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, my favorite books.
Favorite travel story
Jim and I were in a long line at Walt Disney World (one of our favorite places) and I saw a deaf student from my school way ahead of us in one of those twisty lines! Of course it would have been useless to call out to him, so I just raised my hand and fingerspelled his name over and over, until I caught his eye. We then were able to chat, though we were far from each other. Sign language is pretty darn cool.
Ingrid Bergman was so classically beautiful. And look at Helen Mirren! She looks like a beautiful woman in her 60s, which she is. And who doesn't love America's sweetheart, Jennifer Lawrence? So lovely in a fresh, natural way.
Best skincare advice
Beauty is not about makeup; it's about washing your face every evening and using a booster like DHC's Renewing AHA Cream. And, never underestimate the power of a good moisturizer.
On feeling beautiful in your own skin
It starts inside! Choose an attitude of love and respect for the people you encounter. Treasure what God has blessed you with. Take care of yourself physically, emotionally, spiritually.
What do you love about being retired?
Being with my husband Jim every day. I adore his company. I also love knowing I never have to go to another stupid staff meeting again in my life.
Do you still have reason to use your sign language interpretation skills?
I tutor a couple of young people every week, and I still use sign with some of my interpreter friends and deaf friends, of course.
How would you describe your personal style?
Eclectic. When I had foot surgery and couldn't wear high heels anymore, I still wore my pretty, flowing skirts, but I did so with fun flats of different colors and styles.
