I am a professional actor and singer, and I teach classes and workshops.

Theater in her genes
My sisters and I grew up doing shows in school—and backyard theater. It's in my genes: My mother was an actress too.

Forging connections through acting
Hopefully, it is a way to connect to people and to be a conduit and help them to connect—with themselves, their feelings, their truths.

Interests & hobbies
Bikram yoga and running. My husband and I just started a new theater company here in Milwaukee. My ultimate interest is my daughter, Hannah! I also practice jin shin jyutsu, the ancient art of harmonizing the life energy in the body.

Beauty icons
In my youth, my icons were Julie Andrews, Shirley Jones and Barbara Cook—the consummate ingenues of musical theater. Nowadays, I'd say my icons are women who aren't afraid of embracing their experience and age and being themselves.

Best skincare advice
Use DHC. Moisturize. Drink lots of water. Sunscreen. And, honestly, live happy. Breathe, exhale. Meditate/pray/be: Love.

On feeling beautiful in your own skin
Put your best face forward every day, even when you're staying home all day. Think beautiful thoughts and do something nice for someone daily. Most of our feelings of beauty come from within.

I mostly teach singing but occasionally perform in operas, concerts and recitals.

Opera: singing's science
I came to opera through my interests in classical singing and acting. To quote a blog I read, "Opera is to singing as neuro-surgery is to medicine." It's not easy, but when it works, it can be incredibly exhilarating.

Interests & hobbies
Running, biking, reading, seeing theater and movies.

Beauty icon
Katharine Hepburn—unconventional, simple, bold, comfortable

Best skincare advice
"If it feels good, it's probably beautiful" is an adage many singers are familiar with. I like to think the same applies to skincare: if how you tend to your skin lets it feel fabulous (fresh, supple, nourished), it probably looks that way to others!

More about Niffer and Diane

What are your favorite books and why?
Diane: The Remains of the Day. Kazuo Ishiguro's elegant portrait of self-delusion never fails to devastate me. Niffer: Way too many for me to pinpoint just one.

What's something about you that we might be surprised to learn?
Niffer: I love punk rock! Diane: I'm a practitioner of the Feldenkrais Method® of movement education (an approach to somatic learning which expands a person's repertoire of movements, enhances awareness, improves function and enables people to express themselves more fully).

Do you like to cook? If so, what's a favorite meal or recipe you enjoy making?
Niffer: I go through stages of cooking a fair amount and then not so much. I'm in a not-so-much stage right now. I love to make guacamole. Diane: Nope—I'm all about takeout!
