I most admire
My grandmother. She was an Italian immigrant who came to this country in 1906. She had no formal education, yet she was the smartest and most outstanding woman I have ever known.
On surviving Hurricane Katrina
I live alone, and at 6:00AM I was awakened by loudspeakers telling everyone to evacuate my building.
I threw on jeans, a tee, and a sweater. I grabbed my medication, my cash (less than $75), and, of course, my makeup! I got in the car and realized I had no idea where I was going.
I called the Holy Angels School where my son, Robert, was. The sisters who live there said I was welcome to come. The drive took 15 hours—normally it would take five. After seeing and hearing other people’s experiences, I know I was very blessed. It reconfirmed my conviction that
faith in God will see you through tough times. |

I’ve had scleroderma (progressive systemic sclerosis) for 40 years. I’ve been fighting the disease for a long time, and I’m
