Occupation
Middle school literature teacher and graduate student. I am pursuing a master of arts in English literature at New York's Mercy College.
Interests and hobbies
I am a voracious reader and usually have two or three books going at the same time. I also enjoy listening to National Public Radio. In addition, I model part-time. It's a fun way to earn extra money and make new friends.
Inspiration
My grandmother. She accomplishes everything through sheer willpower. When she was in her 40s, she realized her dream of becoming a teacher. Now at the age of 97, she lives in the home where she raised her children and can still kick a soccer ball around with my sons.
I am passionate about
Education. We all learn at different rates and in different ways, but that's what keeps life interesting.
Greatest achievement
My two sons: Chris, age 12, and Faron, age 10. Nothing I've ever done in life compares with the sense of accomplishment I get when I look at them.
Something you'd never guess
I was born in a 150-year-old farmhouse. The doctor wouldn't admit my mother to the hospital because he thought her contractions were false labor. He sent her home.
Best family activity
Going to the beach together. I finally tried surfing last summer—and loved it.
