DHC Skincare Ingredient Powerhouses

The Powerhouse Ingredients in DHC Products

Japan likes their skincare just like they like their sushi: made with simple, quality ingredients that pack a punch. In other words, less is always more. Each ingredient is carefully selected for a specific purpose, and because the ingredient list is usually small, each component is necessary and of the highest quality. Japanese women live by the notion that their skin is a reflection of their health, so it’s no wonder many of the ingredients you’ll find in products are also ones you’ll find in food (when we say the skincare ingredients are quality, we mean it). Wondering what some of these ingredients are? We compiled an index of the ingredient powerhouses we use in our products to give you a little taste of their benefits and why we love them.

Organic Virgin Olive Oil

Yes, the one you commonly find in delish Italian dishes. Though it doesn’t originate in Japan, olive oil is used in many popular Japanese skincare products and is particularly special to ours. In fact, over 70% of our products have olive derived ingredients! Why do we love the aromatic liquid so much? Because olive oil's beauty benefits are unmatched! For one, it provides long-lasting moisture while protecting the skin almost instantaneously upon application. It also helps fight signs of aging by preventing damage caused by free radicals and environmental impurities, thanks to its antioxidant properties. Olive oil is also non-comedogenic—its lightweight texture doesn’t clog pores. It’s rich in protective squalane, vitamins, omega-6, and oleic acid that all work to soften the skin, promote elasticity, and fight oxidative damage. Basically, this ingredient is jam-packed with skin-loving properties that make products like our Olive Virgin Oil, Deep Cleansing Oil, and Velvet Skin Coat the ultimate skincare stars.

Rice Peptides

It’s true—rice is a lot more than just your staple side dish or favorite sake drink. Rice derivatives can actually be heaven for your skin. Rice peptides specifically revitalize skin, promote skin cell turnover, help eliminate dullness and encourage firmness—it’s the perfect anti-aging superhero. Rice water is also known to lighten dark spots and brighten dull skin; applying it will help you to achieve a soft, smooth texture. Our Urumai Collection is a great example of the benefits of rice in skincare. All three products in the collection feature rice peptides to give you soft, supple, perfectly plump skin, which is what Japanese women cherish (and millions more!)

Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 is most commonly known as a health supplement, but ever since we found out it has skin benefits too, we couldn’t get enough. Coenzyme Q10 is a nutrient produced naturally in our bodies that helps to promote cellular energy production and protect cells from harmful environmental stress. What happens when you use it topically? When applied to skin, CoQ10 can help keep your skin looking young by counteracting environmental stresses that lead to dullness, dryness and fine lines. It’s the perfect anti-aging skincare agent and we infused our whole bestselling CoQ10 Collection with it (yes, we love it that much!).

Super Collagen

Collagen is a naturally occurring protein found in our skin that keeps it full and supple. The thing about our Super Collagen, though, is we designed it. Yes, our very own DHC research scientists found a way to micronize the collagen peptides into Dipeptide-8, a much smaller skin-firming collagen molecule (and it’s vegan!). Because our Super Collagen is so much smaller, your skin absorbs it almost instantly, maximizing hydration and elasticity. Cool, right? So cool, that we created three skincare products packed with it: Super Collagen Mist, Super Collagen Supreme and Super Collagen Cream. It’s one of our favorite powerhouse ingredients of the bunch because it possesses superhero properties.

Astaxanthin

A marine-derived collagen, Astaxanthin supercharges the skin. It’s most commonly found in Pacific salmon, meaning it’s natural and fits the bill for the perfect Japanese skincare ingredient. This little antioxidant has a myriad of benefits. Because it is 6,000 times more effective than vitamin C and 550 times more powerful than vitamin E, this superpowered antioxidant skincare ingredient can help increase skin moisture and elasticity while promoting smoothness and decreasing the appearance of fine lines. We developed our Astaxanthin Collagen All-in-One Gel with it to give you a product that hydrates and brightens the skin in one step.
